The University of Cambridge recognises the vital contribution that research using animals has made in developing treatments for major human and animal diseases. The University actively promotes, develops and utilises new methods of research that replace animals, where possible. Our scientists are developing humane alternative methods to animal models, which help remove the need for animal use and allow us to move towards an end-goal of ending the use of animals in research.
Only where a programme of animal research is necessary and considered justified by AWERB is it submitted to the Home Office for assessment and processing. The principles of the ’3Rs’ also underpin all animal-related work at the University, ensuring that if animals have to be used, then the numbers are minimised and all procedures, care routines and husbandry are refined and reviewed to maximise welfare.
The University is committed to openness and transparency regarding our use of animals in research and the facilities that we have. The following pages describe the different animal facilities that are found within the University of Cambridge and the types of research that take place at them.
The University of Cambridge has the following types of animal facilities:
-
Large Animal Facility
-
Aquatics Facilities
-
Rodent and Rabbit Facilities
-
Germ-Free Facility
-
Non-Human Primate Facility
If you are interested in finding out more about any of these facilities, the equipment within them or the types of research that takes place at them, please contact the UBS Strategic Planning and Collaborations Manager at kb780@cam.ac.uk
