Abstract
Many animals kept and used for human benefit are sentient. The development of animal welfare science in recent decades has enabled us to assess the experiences and interests of sentient animals, with morally relevant findings. The veterinary profession’s role in animal welfare is evolving in this context, with societal expectation that veterinarians will provide animal welfare leadership.
The profession has recently clarified its dual animal welfare responsibility: to protect and promote the welfare of animals under our care, while also stimulating broader societal change to address the root causes of poor welfare. Dr Sean Wensley will discuss this evolving veterinary advocacy role, with reference to animals in research and to his recently published book “Through A Vet’s Eyes”, serves as an eye-opening exploration of humanity's relationship with animals, urging readers to reflect on their role in promoting animal well-being and ethical treatment.
