RSPCA-Useful Alternative Approaches

The RSPCA list a number of Alternative approaches: the use of isolated cells and tissues, using computers and mathematics to model biological processes and predict the effects of chemicals and drugs, designing ways of doing experiments safely in human volunteers, using simple organisms, such as bacteria, to study basic biological processes
exploring new advanced technologies such as robotics, molecular techniques, tissue engineering and "organs-on-microchips", not doing the experiment at all is one option - we encourage greater consideration of whether animal use could be avoided through more critical ethical review.

Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME)

FRAME is dedicated to the development of new and valid methods that will replace the need for laboratory animals in medical and scientific research, education, and testing. Where the use of animals is currently necessary, FRAME supports the reduction of numbers involved to an unavoidable minimum and refinement of experimental procedures to minimise any suffering caused. The E-learning resource of FRAME has been set up to provide teachers, school children, students and general supporters with information about the different areas of animal experimentation and with specific resources as to how it can be reduced, refined or replaced.
