University Biomedical Services (UBS)

 

Three licences are required by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) before testing on animals is allowed. The 3 licences needed are:

  • personal licence for each person carrying out procedures on animals

  • project licence for the programme of work

  • establishment licence for the place at which the work is carried out

Within the Act A(SP)A 1986, all individuals responsible for the care and welfare of the animals etc. are listed on the Establishment Licence for the Institution.

These roles include:

  • Establishment Licence Holder (PEL)

  • Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS)

  • Named Animal Care & Welfare Officer (NACWO)

  • Named Training & Competency Officer (NTCO)

  • Named Information Officer (NIO)
