University Biomedical Services (UBS)


The University of Cambridge Named Information Officer is also Compliance Support Officer, their role under Home Office Guidelines is to:

  • be familiar with the main provisions of ASPA;
  • be familiar with the species used and the types of research performed in the establishment;
  • proactively search for and disseminate relevant up-to-date information, including information on implementing the 3Rs;
  • be actively involved with, and provide advice to, the AWERB, in particular relating to
  • the gathering and dissemination of information;
  • maintain contacts for information sharing (e.g. with the Home Office and specialist groups and bodies such as the ASC, LASA, NC3Rs and animal welfare organisations);
  • maintain local contacts based, for example, on function, role and research interests in order to be able to direct information proactively and towards relevant individuals;
  • assist project licence holders to secure information relevant to their projects; and
  • provide guidance on where and how to search for relevant information.

Additionally the dimensions of the Named Information and Compliance Support Officer(NICSO) role at the University requires-

  • Direct support to the Welfare Director and the Establishment Licence Holder with areas relating to the collection and dissemination of information both for internal processes and external communication, including FOI requests and HO non-standard queries.
  • Is responsible for ensuring that those dealing with animals in the University have access to information they need about the species held there and the procedures being performed.
  • Establishes and maintains a network within and external to the establishment to gather relevant information and to be able to target its dissemination to appropriate individuals.
  • Provides back-up support to the training function of University Biomedical Services and provide some course lectures, preparing appropriate teaching materials to Licensee and Institute of Animal Technology.
  • The NICSO is line manager for the AWERB, Licence and Training Support Team within UBS.
